How to save at the stores you already shop

The easiest savings don't require a new store. Most big chains run free loyalty programs that add digital coupons, member prices and rewards automatically when you scan your phone number or app at checkout. The programs below are free to join. The trick is to join only the ones for stores you visit at least a few times a month, so the emails and apps stay manageable.

Big-box and department stores

Big-box loyalty programs usually combine three things: member-only prices, digital coupons you clip in the app, and a rewards balance you can spend later. Before you buy something big, check the app for a coupon, then compare the price with one other store. Many chains also have a price match or price adjustment policy, so read the store's policy page before you rely on it, since terms differ by store and change during the holidays.

Pharmacies

Pharmacy rewards programs are often the most generous for everyday items like toothpaste, vitamins and cold medicine. Watch the weekly ad for items that earn bonus rewards, and use those rewards on your next trip before they expire. For prescriptions, ask the pharmacist whether a generic is available and whether your insurance or a free discount card gives the lower price; that question alone can save more than any coupon.

Dollar and discount stores

Dollar stores are good for cleaning supplies, party goods, storage bins and pantry basics, but compare unit prices: a small package at a low price isn't always cheaper per ounce. Dollar General's free myDG program loads digital coupons in the app, and DG often runs a Saturday $5 off $25 coupon. See our Dollar General deals this week page for current coupon stacks, and Dollar General Black Friday 2026 for what to expect in late November.

Groceries

Groceries are where habits beat coupons. Plan meals around the weekly ad, shop with a list, buy store brands and compare unit prices. Our grocery bill guide walks through each step. In November, several grocery chains give away a free turkey when you spend a set amount on your loyalty card; see free turkey for Thanksgiving 2026 for confirmed rules and dates.

Local deals and experiences

Restaurants, attractions and local services often post their best prices on deal sites and in their own apps. Buy only for places you'd visit anyway, check the expiration date and fine print, and use the voucher soon so it doesn't go to waste.

Travel: flights, hotels and rental cars

Compare at least two travel sites, check the hotel's or airline's own site, and look at the total price with taxes and fees. For cars, read how to rent a car without overpaying, and browse our budget travel guides for destination tips.

When a deal isn't a deal

A sale only saves money if you needed the item anyway. Before you buy, ask three quick questions: would I buy this at full price, do I have room to store it, and will I use it before it expires? Holiday ads and "limited time" banners are designed to rush you, so it helps to keep a short wish list of things you actually need and buy from that list when they go on sale. Setting a monthly spending limit for each store, and checking it in your bank app, keeps small trips from adding up.

Five rules that work at every store

  1. Use one loyalty account per store, every time, so rewards add up in one place.
  2. Check the app for digital coupons before you check out.
  3. Compare the unit price, not just the shelf price.
  4. Stack cashback apps on top of store savings where the app allows it.
  5. Keep receipts until you know you're keeping the item.
