Free turkey with no purchase
If money is tight, you don't have to spend $150 or more to get a turkey. Food banks, churches, the Salvation Army and community groups give away turkeys and holiday food boxes, usually in the week or two before Thanksgiving, and many ask you to sign up ahead of time.
- Call or text 211 and ask for Thanksgiving meals or holiday food boxes near your ZIP code. It's free and confidential (211.org).
- Find your food bank with Feeding America's food bank finder, then check its holiday distribution dates.
- Ask early. Sign-ups often close a week or more before the holiday.
How to make a spend-and-get deal worth it
A free turkey worth $20 to $30 only saves money if you were going to spend that much at the store anyway. Use one loyalty card for every trip so all your spending counts, move your normal weekly grocery run to that store for a few weeks, and don't buy extra just to hit the total.
