Quick answer: The cheapest way to host Thanksgiving dinner in 2026 is to start from a store meal bundle (Walmart $35 for 10, Hy-Vee under $35 for 10, Lidl $34.40 for up to 10 with Lidl Plus, or Aldi under $39 for 10), plan a short menu around it, get your turkey free or with cash back, and ask guests to bring one dish each. That keeps a dinner for 10 close to $3.50 to $4 a person before extras like butter, eggs and spices.

Thanksgiving 2026 is Thursday, November 26. Bundle prices below come from each store's own announcement, checked October 30–31, 2026. Prices are pre-tax and vary by store and turkey weight.

Step 1: Set a budget and a head count

Decide how much you can spend in total, then divide by the number of guests. A per-person number makes every choice easier: if you're aiming for $5 a person, a $35 bundle for 10 leaves you about $15 for extras.

  • Count adults and kids separately. Kids eat less, so a "feeds 10" bundle often covers a bigger family.
  • Plan on leftovers on purpose. A slightly bigger turkey usually costs little more per pound and covers lunches for days, which saves on next week's grocery bill.

Step 2: Start from a meal bundle

Store bundles are priced as loss leaders, so they're usually cheaper than buying the same items one by one. Compare the 2026 options:

Step 3: Keep the menu short

Most of the cost of Thanksgiving is in the number of dishes, not the turkey. A budget menu that still feels like a feast:

  • Turkey (or a turkey breast for small groups)
  • Two starches: mashed potatoes and stuffing
  • One or two vegetables: green bean casserole or roasted carrots
  • Cranberry sauce and gravy (gravy from the turkey drippings is free)
  • Rolls
  • One dessert: pumpkin pie from canned pumpkin is one of the cheapest pies to make

Skip the appetizer spread. Most guests won't miss it, and it saves room for dinner.

Step 4: Get the turkey free or cheap

  • Free turkey offers: several stores, including BJ's, ShopRite, Giant Eagle and Hy-Vee, have confirmed 2026 free turkey promotions. Rules and dates are in free turkey for Thanksgiving 2026.
  • Cash back: Ibotta's Any Brand Turkey Roast offer runs through Nov 26, 2026 after you finish its in-app bonus.
  • Low per-pound prices: Walmart's basket prices Butterball at $0.97 per pound, and Target's Good & Gather frozen turkey is 79 cents per pound starting in November, per each store's announcement.
  • Buy frozen, early. A frozen turkey needs about a day in the fridge for every 4 to 5 pounds to thaw, so a 16-lb bird needs about four days. Buying early lets you grab the sale price and avoids last-minute markups.

Step 5: Shop your pantry first, then go store brand

  • Check what you already have: flour, sugar, butter, spices, broth and baking dishes. Cross them off before you shop.
  • Buy store brands for broth, canned pumpkin, cream of mushroom soup, fried onions, butter and flour. They're the same basic ingredients for less.
  • Buy fresh herbs only if a recipe really needs them; dried sage, thyme and rosemary go much further.

Step 6: Make it a potluck

Asking each guest to bring one side or dessert is the single biggest way to cut costs. Give everyone a specific dish so you don't end up with three pies and no vegetables. Keep the turkey, stuffing and gravy yourself so the main meal comes out right.

Step 7: Save on the extras

  • Drinks: a big pitcher of iced tea, cider or water with fruit costs far less than bottled sodas.
  • Disposables: real plates and a dishwasher run cost less than buying paper goods, and they look nicer.
  • Leftovers: turn turkey into soup, sandwiches or casseroles, and freeze what you can't eat in three to four days.

Frequently asked questions

How can I make Thanksgiving dinner on a budget?

Start from a store meal bundle such as Walmart's $35 basket for 10 or Aldi's dinner for 10 under $39, keep the menu to six or seven dishes, get your turkey through a free turkey offer or cash back, buy store brands, and ask each guest to bring one dish.

What is the cheapest Thanksgiving dinner for 10 in 2026?

Based on store announcements checked Oct 30, 2026, Lidl's basket is $34.40 for up to 10 (Lidl Plus members, Nov 11 to 25), Hy-Vee's is under $35 for 10, Walmart's is $35 for 10 and Aldi's is under $39 for 10. That is about $3.50 to $4 a person before tax and extras.

How much does Thanksgiving dinner cost per person?

With a 2026 store bundle, the core meal costs about $3.50 to $5 a person. Pantry extras like butter, milk, eggs and spices add to that, and a bigger menu or more guests raises the total.

When should I buy my Thanksgiving turkey?

Buy a frozen turkey one to two weeks early when sale prices start, and leave about a day in the fridge for every 4 to 5 pounds to thaw. A 16-pound turkey needs about four days.

Is a potluck Thanksgiving cheaper?

Yes. Having each guest bring one side or dessert spreads the cost, so the host only pays for the turkey and a few basics. Assign specific dishes to avoid duplicates.
