Whatever your destination, the same handful of habits keeps road trip costs down. Here's our checklist.
Before you leave
- Check tire pressure when tires are cold, using the number on the driver's door sticker. Proper inflation helps fuel economy and tire life.
- Get an oil change and look at wipers, lights and brakes if they're due. A breakdown far from home costs much more.
- Take off roof racks and empty the trunk of anything you don't need.
Fuel
- Compare prices in an app before exiting. Stations right at highway exits often charge more.
- Some stations post a lower cash or debit price.
- Drive steady. Hard acceleration and high speeds use more fuel.
- Don't idle for long stops.
Food
A cooler with sandwiches, fruit and drinks cuts costs fast. Stop at grocery stores rather than gas station shops for snacks and water.
Lodging
- Call hotels directly and ask for the best rate and whether parking and breakfast are included.
- Ask about discounts you may qualify for, such as auto club, military or senior rates.
- Consider campgrounds or splitting a rental with others.
Plan the route
Compare toll and toll-free routes, and plan stops for fuel and rest every couple of hours. Driving tired isn't worth the savings.
